Rochester, NY - As the
number one seed in the tournament, the Illini were
given the luxury of getting the late start in the
last game of the day. Of the other 7 games throughout
the day, there was only one upset as #10 Iowa State
dropped #7 Ohio 2-0. The Illini were hoping that the
Ohio loss would be the only upset on the day..
As the game opened up, it wasn't looking good for
the Illini. The team came out flat, and were being
out skated by Robert Morris. Two early Illini penalties
had the Colonials up with a two man advantage, and
before the Illini could even register one shot on goal,
Robert Morris was up to five. Mike Burda, in net for
the Illini, along with the goal post, were able to
keep the Colonials out of the net and help the Illini
kill off the penalties. Robert Morris' first penalty
kill wouldn't favor as well, and at the 6:05 mark in
the period, sophomore Brad Hoelzer would fire a rocket
from the top of the slot that would find the back of
the Robert Morris net, seniors Nick Fabbrini and Johnny
Liang helping set up the power play goal. Robert Morris
would climb back into the game, capitalizing on an
Illini hooking call, with John Kalichuk getting a back
door shot past Mike Burda. The Illini would pick up
the pace some late in the period, and with just a minute
and a half left in the first, junior Ton Connell, teamed
up with Daniel Cohen and JJ Heredia, would charge the
net and send a shot past the Colonials Jon Hoffman,
picking up the go ahead goal. By the end of the
period the late rushes by the Illini would have them
out shooting the Colonials 12-7.
The Illini would look a little better in the middle
frame, allowing them to kill off 3 penalties and still
out shoot Robert Morris, but by a slimmer margin of
13-12. The back and forth game would finally result
in a goal, as the Illini power play would once again
take advantage of a Robert Morris penalty. At the 12:37
mark in the period, freshman Daniel Cohen would race
into the Colonials zone and dish a pass off to senior
Drew Heredia at the top of the crease, who send a shot
into the net, extending the Illini's lead to 3-1.
The Illini would come alive in the third period, and
for the first time really shut down the Colonial's
offense, allowing them only 4 shots on goal for the
period. Robert Morris would have some penalty problems
in the period, and once again the Illini would make
the best out of the situation. At the 7:43 mark in
the third, Brad Hoelzer would tee up another shot,
this time from the point, and once again he would find
the back of the Colonial's net. Seniors Joey Resch
and Johnny Liang would pick up the helpers on the Illini's
3rd power play goal. The Illini would keep Robert Morris
at bay for the remainder of the game, securing the
first round 4-1 win. .
The Illini's perfect record continues to grow, now
at 35-0-0, and the win moves them onto round two of
the tournament to face #8 University of Rhode Island,
once again in the 8:30pm late game.
