Champaign, IL - The Illini
opened the final regular season game of the year by
honoring their senior class for their last game of
their careers on the Big Pond. And with the starting
line up comprised of 5 of the 7 seniors, the Illini
were ready to put a cap on the perfect regular season.
The
Illini came out hard and fast and took control of the
game early against Adrian College. Over the course
of the first 20 minutes the Bulldogs were allowed only
2 shots on goal compared to the Illini's 18, 3 of which
would light the lamp for the home team. The first Illini
goal would come just over five minutes into the period
as Captain Drew Heredia and Johnny Liang would make
a break towards Adrian's net, with Heredia passing
the puck over to Liang at the top of the crease for
the easy pop in goal. The Illini would strike again
at the 11:46 mark as junior Tom Connell would send
a shot from the slot past Adrian's net minder Matt
Welch, the assists going to Joey Resch and Matt Jennings. Just
past the 15 minute mark the Illini would notch their
third goal of the period as junior Andy Betourne, with
help from Pat Saliba and Mark Price, would get off
a quick shot from the slot that would find the back
of the net.
Johnny Liang would kick off the scoring for the Illini
in the second period as well, as Matt Jennings would
pass the puck back to Liang rushing into the Bulldog's
zone, then wristing a shot into the Adrian net just
88 seconds in. Just over a minute later the Illini
senior Nick Fabbrini let go of a slapshot from the
top of the slot that would give the the Orange and
Blue a 5 goal lead, the helpers going to Dave Schmitt
and Joe Cardona. 7:29 into the period another senior
would extend the lead for the Illini as Alex park would
wrist in a shot from the top of the circle, Joey Resch
helping set up the play. As if three goals weren't
enough for the period, freshman Tim Gilbert would find
the puck bouncing his way, then with a quick flick
of the wrist, send the puck into the Bulldog's net.
The Illini would again outshoot Adrian, sending 14
shots towards the net compared to the Bulldogs 4.
The third period would open with freshman Nick Pecoraro
getting some time in net, replacing DJ Kohler who kept
the Bulldogs off the board for the first 40 minutes
of play. At the 8:39 mark freshman Ryan Goberstein
would score his first career goal as an Illini, banging
away at the puck in front of the Adrian net, the assists
going to Tim Gilbert and Pat Saliba. With just under
3 minutes left to go in the match the Illini would
pick up their first power play goal of the game as
senior Joey Resch would send a wrist shot towards the
Adrian goal that would find nothing but net, Drew Heredia
and Tim Gilbert assisting. The Illini would keep the
Bulldogs at bay for the remainder of the game, shutting
out Adrian 9-0, and picking up the weekend sweep.
The Illini now improve there record to 33-0-0 with
only one game left in the regular season, once again
facing Adrian Saturday night on Senior night.
