Illini 5 - Robert Morris 2

Bensenville, IL - The Illini finished off their regular season league play perfectly with a 5-2 win over Robert Morris College, putting a damper on the Eagles senior night celebration. Illini captain Drew Heredia and freshman Daniel Cohen each provided 2 power play goals in Saturday night's game to help the Illini wrap up CSCHL play with a 18-0-0 record before heading into the playoffs.

Prior to the game the Eagle would recognize their senior class and their accomplishments, but it would be a freshman that would start the show for Robert Morris. Just a minute and forty-six seconds into the game, the Eagles Clay Mattson would fire a shot past the Illini's goaltender DJ Kohler, who had just gotten back into net after playing the puck. It would take the Illini to get things together, even being unable to convert on an earlier power play, but at the 12:27 mark, and the Eagles just returning on player to the ice after and Illini 5-3 chance, Daniel Cohen would pick up a rebound off of Robert Morris' Drew Stanton and send back into the net. Senior Alex Park would fire the shot that Stanton couldn't handle, getting the first assist, with the second going to Jordan Pringle. The Illini would get another power play chance in the closing minutes of the period, and with just 55 seconds left in the first, Drew Heredia would send a shot from the dot that would find the back of the Eagles net and give the Illini the 2-1 lead.

Halfway through the second period Drew Heredia would pickup where he left off, sending the puck past the Eagles Stanton, Jason Nemeth setting up the play by sending a shot towards the net. The Illini would get another 5-3 chance in the period, but wouldn't be able to convert, keeping the Illini lead to 3-1 at the end of the period. The Illini would once again outshoot the Eagles, 20-5 in the second period alone, with a total of 37-11 for the first 40 minutes.

Robert Morris put the pressure on the Illini in the final period, and would actually send two more shots towards the net than the Illini. Four and a half minutes into the third, the Eagles would cut the Illini lead to one goal as Bobby Carlson would slip the puck past the Illini's Kohler as the two teams battled in front of the Illini net. The Illini would get one power play chance in the third period, and at the 12:58 point Daniel Cohen would pick up his second goal of the game, sending a wrist shot into the Eagles net. The assists on the fourth Illini power play goal would go to Drew Heredia and Jason Nemeth. With under three minutes to play in the game, the Illini would finally score their first even strength goal of the weekend. The Eagles Stanton would give up another rebound that junior Pat Saliba wound pick up and send back into the net, Daniel Cohen and Ricky Gomez assisting. The Saliba goal would wrap up the scoring for the night and give the Illini the 5-2 win.

The Illini's record now improves to 29-0-0 and they look forward to hosting the CSCHL playoffs as the #1 seed next weekend in Champaign.
