Illini 3 - Iowa State 2

Des Moines, IA - What's more fitting on groundhogs day than a repeat of the previous days game? What's more fitting on groundhogs day than a repeat of the previous days game? Even though the game was held in the beautiful Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Saturday afternoon, there was a very eerie similarity to Friday nights match. Once again the Illini would battle back from a two goal deficit in the third period to send the game into overtime, then pull of the OT win.

The Illini would look a little sharper in the first period than the previous night, but still seemed to struggle on the power play, turning over the puck in the Iowa State zone allowing them to clear the puck. The Illini were able to outshoot the Cyclones 11 to 6 in the period, but neither team would be able to come up with a goal.

Again the Illini would dominate play in the second period, spending the majority of the time in the ISU zone, and out shooting them 15 to 4, but still couldn't come up with a goal against the Cyclones Hudson in net. The Cyclones however would be able to make the best of their 4 shots by scoring twice, both on the power play. The first goal would come just 39 seconds into the period as the Cyclones Mike Lebler would take advantage of a late first period Illini penalty. Less than three minutes later Iowa State would again find themselves on the power play and once again they would convert, this time with Brent Cornelius finding the back of the Illini net, giving the Cyclones the 2-0 lead that would hold through the remainder of the period.

In the third period the Illini would finally find a way to put some points on the board. At the 11:47 point in the period sophomore Matt Jennings would flip the puck from the front of the net, cutting the Cyclones lead in half, the lone assist going to Johnny Liang. With time running out on the Illini, a pair of seniors would team up, and Alex Park would send a shot past ISU's Hudson at the 15:45 point in the period, knotting the game at two, the lone assist going to Kevin Wicklin. With neither team able to come up with the go ahead goal in the final minutes, for the third straight time the Illini would be headed into overtime. Shots on goal in the third period would once again be in the Illini's favor, 11 to 5.

Skating 4 on 4 for the extra period, both teams would have their chances, but with just 1:26 left to play sophomore Brad Hoelzer lift a shot top shelf giving the Illini the overtime victory. Team captain Drew Heredia would get the lone assist on the game winning overtime goal.

The 4 league points move the Illini into first place in the league with 64 points, tied with Lindenwood, and with two more league games left to play before the CSCHL playoffs.
