Champaign, IL - In a game that started out looking like the Illini might be able to run away with, Ohio stepped up and after 65 minutes of play a winner still wouldn't be decided. It wasn't until the 11th round of a shootout that senior Joey Resch would give the Illini the 2-1 win over the Bobcats, and the teams 25 straight win.
The Illini would come out strong at the start of the game and it paid off quickly for them as just 2:40 into the game freshman Tim Gilbert pick up a rebound from a Nick Fabbrini shot and send it to the back of the Ohio net. It would be from that point on that the Bobcats would put a stranglehold on the Illini offense, limiting them to just 9 shots on goal, just 1 more than Ohio themselves.
Each team would get their share of power play chances, but neither would be able to convert. The Illini would have an extra attacker near the mid-point of the second period, but an errant pass would be picked off by Ohio and would end up with the Bobcats Jeff Jepson streaking in and lifting the puck past the Illini's goaltender Mike Burda. The Illini would pick up one more shot on goal than in the previous round, but would not get anything past Ohio's Marshall, ending the second period with the game knotted at 1.
A defensive stalemate in the third period would limit both teams to 9 shots on goal and neither being able to put anything on the board sending the game into overtime still tied at 1-1. With teams skating 4 on 4, the Illini would get some chances, putting 4 shots on goal, but again, neither team picking up the game winning goal.
With a short break after the overtime period each team would pick out their 5 shooters for the shootout. Ohio would send Max Malone, JJ Plutt, Dave Fitzgerald, Jim Fuhs, and Ryan Tessmer, while the Illini would put up Joey Resch, JJ Heredia, Johnny Liang, Nick Fabbrini, and Daniel Cohen. Both of the first two shooters would be rejected, but the next two Ohio shooters would score, giving them a 2-0 lead with only two more shooters left.
Mike Burda would reject both of the next Bobcat shooters while Nick Fabbrini and Daniel Cohen would keep the Illini in the hunt and send the shootout into sudden death. Both teams would make two more goals and miss three, running through the five shooters a second time. On the third try Ohio's Malone was turned away giving the Illini an opening and senior Joey Resch, who was turned away on his first two shots, skated in on Marshall and sent the puck past his outstretched glove hand and into the back of the net for the shootout win.
The Illini picked up 4 more league points, moving them now to within 8 points of first place Lindenwood.
