Illini 5 - Kent State 2

Champaign, IL - Another game, another win, and 4 more CSCHL points. Both teams came out playing a little harder than the night before, but it was the Illini that came out on top once again as they downed the Golden Flashes of Kent State with a score of 5-2.

A Kent State penalty early in the first period gave the Illini the first man advantage of the game, and at the 4:09 mark junior Jordan Pringle put the Illini on the board first as he took a pass in the slot from junior Jason Nemeth and sent the puck past the Flashes Ryan Gregory. Half way through the period Kent State stole the puck from the Illini and a shot from Chad Melburg would get past the Illini's DJ Kohler to tie the game at 1-1. Just 28 seconds later however, the Illini would tie up the Golden Flashes behind their own net, and sophomore Matt Jennings would take away the puck and send it to the front of the net where senior Joey Resch was waiting to fire it into the Kent State goal. The Illini would double up on the number of Kent State shots, putting 17 shots on net compared to the Flashes 8.

Junior Tom Connell would start off the scoring in the second period and extend the Illini's lead to two goals. A shot from Kevin Wicklin would bounce off the back wall and onto Connell's stick, allowing him to send it into the Flashes net at the 6:41 mark in the second, Daniel Cohen getting the second assist. Three Kent State penalties left the Illini skating with a 2 man advantage, and take advantage of it they did. Tom Connell would assist this time, sending a pass over to Jason Nemeth who would put a one timer behind the goaltender and into the Flashes net from just inside the circle, Alex Park getting the second assist on the goal at 15:51. One minute later and still on the power play, it would almost look like an instant replay as Alex Park would get the puck to Connell who would send a pass to the slot, but this time it would be senior Drew Heredia that would net the goal. A rash of late penalties would lead to the Flashes second goal of the game as they were skating 4 on 3, and Chris Hourigan would send a shot to the Illini net which would hit the crossbar and in. The Illini would once again send 17 shots towards the Kent State net while allowing the Golden Flashes to only register 7.

The third period would turn into a stalemate with neither team being able to score. A pair of Illini penalties late in the period allowed Kent State to pull their goaltender and skate 6 on 3, but DJ Kohler and Illini defenders were up to the challenge and able to turn away the Flashes. The Illini held onto their 3 goal lead and took the game 5-2.

The win moves the Illini record now to a perfect 23-0-0 and keeps them in second place in the league, still just 10 points behind Lindenwood University .
