January 13, 2008 - It was two hard fought BigTen battles as the Illini met up with the Hoosiers of Indiana in Bloomington, the Illini coming out on top of both games with 2-0 and 5-3 wins. Goaltending was the story of game one, while special teams made the difference in the second match up.
With a late Friday night start, the Illini took to the ice and took control of the first period, allowing the Hoosiers only 3 shots on goal, but couldn't get any of their 12 shots to get past the Indiana goalie. Things evened out for the remainder of the game, the Hoosiers equaling the Illini in shots on goal and each team shutting down the others power play chances. It wasn't until later in the third when teams were skating 4-on-4, when the Illini's Jason Nemeth finally put up the first point on the board. While trying to take advantage of an Illini penalty the Hoosiers pulled their goalie, but the Illini broke up the attack and Joey Resch was able to skate into the Indiana zone and send the puck into the open net, giving the Illini the 2-0 win.
The second game of the series kicked off Saturday afternoon, and was nothing like the first game. The Illini started firing early and it paid off as put in two goals in each of the first two periods, running up a 4-0 lead. Daniel Cohen started off the scoring for the Illini and Jason Nemeth, Alex Park, and Tom Connell all added power play goals to the total. The Hoosiers short circuited an Illini power place chance late second period and were able to net a shorthanded goal to make it a 4-1 game at the end of the second. Tom Connell added another goal for the Illini early in the third, while the Hoosiers put the power play to work for them, netting two more goals with time winding down in the period. The Illini held off the late Indiana rush to take the second game 5-3. The Illini were able to hold Indiana in check throughout the game, allowing the Illini to outshoot the Hoosier 37-17.
The Illini now head into four straight weekends of league play, leading up to the CSCHL playoffs in Champaign mid-February.
