Illini 5 - Indiana 3

Bloomington, IN - It would be a short break between matches, with the second game of the series an early afternoon event. Excessive penalties would slow down the game and special teams would become a big part of the scoring.

The Illini would find themselves fending off an Indiana 5 on 3 advantage early in the first period due to a pair of penalties, but the Hoosiers would be unable to convert. The Illini start off the scoring at the 12:15 point in the period as freshman Daniel Cohen skated ahead of the Hoosier defenders, taking on goaltender Calace and put the puck into the IU net, juniors Andy Betourne and Tom Connell getting the assists. Two minutes later, junior Jason Nemeth would pick up his second goal of the weekend as the Illini would be able to convert on a power play advantage. Senior Drew Heredia would get Nemeth the puck on the side of the net for a top shelf shot that would give the Illini the 2-0 lead. The second assist would again go to Tom Connell.

A rash of penalties in the second period would lead to two more Illini power play goals as well as an Indiana shorthanded goal. At the 13:31 mark in the second senior Alex Park would fire a slapshot from the top of the slot that would find nothing but net, giving the Illini a 3 goal advantage. Helping set up the Park power play goal were Jason Nemeth and Daniel Cohen. The Illini would extend their lead to four goals just two minutes later as Tom Connell would fire a rocket from the point that would zip past the Hoosier netminder. Sophomore Brad Hoelzer and senior Joey Resch would set up the third Illini power play goal. The Illini would once again have the power play advantage late in the period, but with just 32 seconds left, the Hoosiers Matt Henderson would get the puck and fire it past Illini goaltender Mike Burda and make it a 4-1 game after 40 minutes of play.

Tom Connell would team up with Pierce Butler and Andy Betourne for his second goal of the game and to once again give the Illini a 4 goal lead just 5 minutes into the third period, putting in a shot from in front of the net. The Indiana power play units would take over in third as well and Matt Henderson would get his second goal in the game at the 12:31 mark in the period. At the 15:28 point, Indiana would cut the Illini lead to two as Joe Fornari would get another power play goal past the Illini's Burda. Indiana would once again pull their netminder later in the period as an Illini was serving time in the box, but the Illini were able to fend off the attack and take the second game of the match with a 5-3 win.

The the Illini improve their record to 21-0-0 and now return home for two straight weekends of league play against two Ohio teams.
