Bloomington, IN - It had been a while since The Illini made the 3 hour trip over to Bloomington, IN to face the Indiana University Hoosiers, and with warm ups not starting until 9:15pm, it was definitely the latest start they've had to a game in a while.
No one figured the game to turn into a goaltenders dual, especially with Indiana's starting net-minder coming up sick and the backup Sal Calace taking his spot, but both he and the Illini's Mike Burda would keep the opposing shooters from lighting the lamp for most of the game.
In the first period neither team would be able to take advantage of the pair of power play opportunities that they were each given. The Illini were able to shut down the Hoosier offense, limiting them to just 3 shots on goal for the period. The Illini were rejected all 12 times that they sent the puck towards the Hoosier net, making it a 0-0 first period.
The second period would look much like the first, however the Hoosier shooters would equal the Illini in the number of shots on goal, with each team sending 11 shots to the net.
It wouldn't be until late in the third period when the teams were skating 4-on-4 due to coincidental penalties, that the Illini would finally find a way to get the puck past Indiana's Calace. At the 14:09 mark junior Jason Nemeth would bring the puck from behind the goal and get off a shot from the side of the net the would break the 0-0 tie. Assisting on the goal would be team captain Drew Heredia and sophomore Brad Hoelzer.
With an Illini in the box serving a minor penalty, the Hoosiers would pull Calace for the extra attackers, but the Illini would kill of the penalty and then break up the Indiana play, getting the puck to Joey Resch all alone in the Hoosier zone, netting an easy open net goal with 48 seconds left in the game. Helping set up the play were freshman Tim Gilbert and senior Dave Schmitt.
The 2-0 win gives the Illini their 20th straight win for the 2007-08 season and a perfect 20-0-0 record.
