Illini 4 - Western Michigan 0

Champaign, IL - The Illini once again dominated play against Western Michigan, allowing the Stallions to put only 11 shots on goal while the Illini offense sent 51 shots towards the WMU net in Saturday nights 4-0 win.

It would turn out to be a goaltenders stale mate in the first period as neither team would be able to put the puck into their opponents net. The Illini did have one power play opportunity in the period, but weren't able to convert.

The second period started out with an Illini in the box due to a late first period penalty. The Illini were able to kill of that and three others in the period, while getting only one more chance themselves. With both teams skating 4 on 4, sophomore Brad Hoelzer found and opening and sent the puck into the Stallions net, breaking the zero-zero tie at 15:47. Helping set up the lone second period goal were senior Johnny Liang and junior Jason Nemeth.

Things would open up for the Illini in the third, putting more shots on goal in the period than Western Michigan would for the entire weekend combined. Brad Hoelzer would once again find the back of the Stallions net, firing a laser from inside the blue line, while Western Michigan was trying to kill off a major penalty. Jason Nemeth would get the lone assist on the power play goal at the 6:22 mark. Senior Drew Heredia would also tally a power play goal, redirecting a shot from Daniel Cohen past Western Michigan's goaltender Garrett LaPak. Senior Alex Park would be given the second assist on the goal at 12:16. The Stallions would swap out LaPak in favor of Chris Serra in net, but it was too little to late, as the damage already had been done. Serra was perfect for his short outing, and was tested with 15 Illini shots. Junior Andy Betourne was able to take advantage of Serra being swapped out in favor of an extra skater, sending the puck into the empty net with just 32 seconds left in the game, picking up his first goal of the season, and giving the Illini the 4-0 win. Sophomore DJ Kohler earned his 3rd shutout of the season after rejecting all of the Stallions shots.

The win puts the Illini's record now at 15-0-0, and in first place in the CSCHL with 32 points.
