Illini 6 - St. Louis 1

Champaign, IL - From the drop of the puck the Illini spent the majority of the time in the Saint Louis zone, pummeling the Billikens goaltender Jason Magusiak with 47 shots while holing SLU to just 10 shots in the first game of the series. The Illini domination of the game allowed the Orange and Blue to pick up 4 more league points, taking their total now to 20, as they toppled the Billikens 6-1.

The Illini took control of the game early, but for two thirds of the first period, the Illini were unable to find a way to get the puck past Saint Louis' Magusiak. It wasn't until an Illini power play where SLU's netminder would stop a shot but give up a rebound that junior Jason Nemeth would find and bury in the Billikens net. Setting up the power play goal at 13:57 were seniors Nick Fabbrini and Johnny Liang. Besides doing his part on defense to limit SLU to just two shots on goal for the period, senior Ricky Gomez would find the puck on his stick at the 17:23 mark, and firing a shot from the goalies left put the Illini up 2-0. Getting the first of his three assists on the night was freshman Daniel Cohen.

A pair of freshman would team up halfway through the second period to extend the Illinois lead. At the 9:51 mark Zach Honert would score his first goal of the season with a shot from the slot with Daniel Cohen assisting. Also getting an assist on the goal would be the Illini's Mike Burda who was his busiest in the second period as the Billikens shots on goal peaked at 5. Less than a minute and a half later, the Illini would get their 4th goal of the night after a discussion between the referees and the goal judge. With confusion and a mess of bodies around the Billikens net, Drew Heredia would get his 6th goal of the season at the 11:15 mark. Jason Nemeth would be given the lone assist on the goal. The Illini would almost quadruple the number of shots on goal compared to St. Louis, putting 19 on net for the period.

Less than a minute into the third period the Billikens would finally get on the board as St. Louis' Tim Jost would get the puck past the Illini's Mike Burda. A rash of Billiken penalties in the third period would lead to another Illini power play goal as the puck would be passed across the slot to sophomore Matt Jennings who would then fire a one timer between the SLU goaltender and the post giving the Illini a 5-1 edge. Helping set up the power play goal at the 8:39 mark were Daniel Cohen and junior Tom Connell. With under six minutes to play in the game and both teams skating 4 on 4, captain Drew Heredia would grab the puck from the Billikens in the Illini zone and send it over to Johnny Liang who raced down the boards and into the St. Louis end of the ice. Finally turning toward the net, Liang would cut across the slot and fire a backhanded shot that would zip past the Billikens Magusiak at the 14:31 point, and give the Illini the 6-1 win.

The Illini's undefeated streak continues as they are now a perfect 12-0-0 on the season. The Illini finish off the weekend with one more game against the Billikens on Saturday night at 7:00pm.
