Illini win shootout with Lindenwood

Jason Nemeth brings the puck into the Lions zone.

October 21, 2007 - The first road trip of the season proved to be a challenge for the Illini as the contest needed to be decided by a shootout. The Illini's Jason Nemeth had a big night with 2 goals, 1 assist, and the game winning shootout goal.

The Lions of Lindenwood University pounced on the lack luster Illini early, putting up 15 shots on goal in the first period compared to the Illini's 6. The Lions grabbed the early lead on a break away just minutes into the game, but the Illini were able to come back and tie things up with a Johnny Liang power play goal midway through the first period. The Illini came out quick and strong in the second period, and Jason Nemeth put in the go ahead goal within the first minute of play, but that turned out to be the only goal for the middle period. Lindenwood came back and tied the game half way into the third, and then with under two minutes left in the game put in the what looked like the game winning goal. A pair of last minute penalties against Lindenwood had the Illini skating 6 on 3 as the Illini's goaltender DJ Kohler headed to the bench. Last second heroics struck once again for the Illini as with just 2.7 seconds left in the game, Nemeth put the game tying point on the board. Both teams had power play time in the five minute overtime period, but neither were able to capitalize on, sending the game to be resolved by a shootout. The Illini's DJ Kohler stood up to the task, allowing only one of the five Lindenwood shooters to find the back of the net, while Illini shooters Joey Resch and Jason Nemeth made good on their attempts, giving the Illini the 2-1 shootout win, and the 4-3 game victory.

The Illini return home next weekend to once again take on the Lindenwood Lions in a pair of 4-point league games, the first of the season for the Illini. Lindenwood currently leads the league in points as it sits in first place in the CSCHL.
