Champaign, IL - The Illini special teams would shine in the second game of the series between the #2 ranked Illini and the #1 Icers of Penn State. 3 power play goals would account for all of the Illini's scoring as they sweep PSU, winning Saturdays match 3-1.
As the first period got under way, the defense would control the majority of the play as each team felt each other out, looking for the others weakness. Then in the last 3 minutes of the first, the Illini found the Icers Achilles' Heel, as a rash of penalties led to two Illini goals. The Illini would grab the first goal at the 17:39 mark in the period, as Icer net minder Nick Signet would stop the original blast, but with the puck loose beneath him, junior Jason Nemeth would get his stick on it and poke it over the goal line, starting the Illini scoring for the second night in a row. Assisting on the goal were junior Jordan Pringle and senior Johnny Liang. A minute and forty seconds later, just 16 seconds into another power play chance, the Illini would score again as Johnny Liang would let go of a wrist shot that would zip past the Icer's Signet and into the back of the net. Helping set up the power play goal for the 2-0 lead were senior Nick Fabbrini and Jordan Pringle. The extra man at the end of the period helped the Illini outshoot the Icers 13 to 6 for the first 20 minutes.
Penn State would start the second period a man down thanks to a penalty at the end of the first, and with just one second left before the power play was over, the Illini's Jordan Pringle put the Illini up 3-0. Nick Fabbrini and Alex Park would help set up the play, firing a blast towards the net, which Signet would stop, but Pringle would find the puck loose in front of the net and chip it in for the goal. Penn State would pick up the pace of their game, putting more pressure on the Illini and outshoot them 16 to 10, and at 18:21 in the second, the extra effort paid off for the Icers. PSU's Tim O'Brien would finally get the Icers on the board, but that would turn out to be the only puck they would get past Illini goaltender DJ Kohler.
The third period would start and end with the score 3-1, as neither team could find the back of the net. The Icers would be unable to capitalize on two power play chances, or with the goaltender pulled for the last minute and forty seconds of the period. Penn State once again out shot the Illini in the period, 11-8, but Kohler was up to the task, rejecting all chances for the period.
The Illini are now 6-0 on the season, and take their first road trip of the season next weekend to face Lindenwood University for a single game on Saturday night.
