Champaign, IL - The Illini had their fans sitting on the edge of their seats as they pulled off a come back tie and then win in overtime with just seconds left in both cases. The Illini let a 3 goal lead get away from them as Michigan State rallied in the second period, and then pulled ahead late in the third.
The first period of play looked like a replaying of the Friday night game as the Illini came out dominating, putting 17 shots on goal while allowing the Spartans only 6, and heading into the locker room up 2 goals to none. There was a difference in the goal scorers however as senior Nick Fabbrini put the first Illini point on the board. Senior Ricky Gomez let go of a slap shot from the point which Fabbrini, standing if front of the net, redirected past MSU's Justin Sand at the 12:51 mark. Two newcomers for the Illini would team up for the second Illini goal at 16:08 as freshman Mark Price would make a perfect pass back across the slot to Tom Connell who fired a one timer into the back of the Spartan net, picking up his first Illini goal.
The start of the second still appeared to be going the Illini's way as persistence paid off for the Illini. Johnny Liang standing on the left side of the MSU goaltender fired once, got the rebounded puck, fired again, but this time the rebounded puck went across the crease to Joey Resch who flipped it into the open net at the 3:27 mark. But that is where Michigan State turned things around, setting the Illini back on their heels. The Spartans looked like a team possessed and they picked up the pace of the game, pressured the Illini at every chance, and with precision passing and skating, tied things back up. Michigan States captain John Perkovich was the first Spartan to get the men in green on the board at the 7:03 mark. Two and a half minutes later Joe Snook put the puck past Illini's DJ Kohler for the second State goal, bringing them to within one. At 17:12 in the second MSU's Brian Hennessy tied the game at 3-3.
A defensive battle in the third made it appear that the game was going to go to overtime, but with just over five minutes left in the game, Michigan State's Joe Snook netted his second goal of the night, putting the Spartans up 4-3. With just under two
minutes left in the game, and just as the Illini pulled Kohler, the Illini got the break they needed as MSU was called for a high-sticking penalty. Skating 6 on 4 for the majority of the period, and with 12 seconds left in the game, it was senior Alex Park, teamed up with junior Jason Nemeth, that put in the game tying goal, sending the game to overtime.
After a brief two minute break, the teams went to the ice skating 4 on 4 in the sudden death match. The Illini man handled the Spartans for the majority of the extra session, not allowing them any shots on goal, while sending five pucks towards the MSU net themselves. It was the final shot that counted though as junior Jordan Pringle found the back of the Spartan net with just 24 seconds left in the OT period. Assisting on the game winning goal was senior Johnny Liang.
The weekend sweep over MSU give the Illini a perfect 2-0 record in the early season as they look forward to facing the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma on the Big Pond next weekend.
